Are you concerned about a problem tooth? Dr. Frank Gordon, Jr., your Flint, MI endodontist, shares a few signs that may indicate that you need to see a dental specialist.

Common trouble signsDental Exam

If the pulp at the center of your tooth has become infected or inflamed, you may notice one or more of these symptoms that could indicate that you need a root canal:

  • Sensitivity to Extreme Temperatures: Pain that lingers after consuming hot and cold foods or beverages can be an indication that your tooth needs root canal therapy. Without the therapy, you may eventually lose the tooth.
  • Mild to Severe Pain: A constant toothache is never a good sign. Although in many cases, the problem can be solved with cavity treatment and a filling, in some instances, the pain may be an indication of a more serious problem.
  • Dark Tooth: Infection or nerve damage can cause your tooth to darken and look gray.
  • Gum Pain: Gum pain and swelling may occur if your tooth has become infected. You may also notice a small bump or pimple on the gum near the tooth. If you notice these signs, it's important to see your endodontist as soon as possible because the infection may spread if you don't receive antibiotics.
  • Pain When Chewing: When pain occurs when you chew, you may have a cavity or your tooth may be infected or inflamed. In any case, prompt treatment will help relieve your pain.

What happens during root canal therapy in Flint?

You've probably heard old horror stories about root canals, but thanks to innovative dental techniques, undergoing a root canal today is not much different than receiving a filling. Your endodontist will use a drill to expose the pulp, then clean and smooth the root canals in the tooth with a tiny file. In most cases, you'll receive a temporary filling and will return in about a week. During your second visit, your endodontist will examine the tooth and make sure all signs of infection or inflammation are gone before filling the tooth with a flexible material.
